Made in America

Apparently, people didn’t listen to Bob Hope. So many years of buying shoddy merchandise from China and other countries has decimated our manufacturing base in the United States. Our economic situation would be much stronger today if we hadn’t destroyed our own workforce.

This television commercial dates to 1986.

Huxtable the Huckster

Here is a cloyingly annoying television commercial for Jello Pudding, with Bill Cosby shilling unhealthy chemical-ridden slop to unsuspecting children. Yes, I realize we all ate this stuff as children, but as adults, I hope we protect our kids from this tripe. 1982

Hey Baby! Knead my loaf

I don’t know much about this video, but it is obviously British, and obviously from the 80s. So that’s how to stay healthy.

Look out Vice cops on the move

Opening credits for “Miami Vice”, 1984. This detective series was typical of bland cop show storylines, specializing in lurid prostitution and drug-trafficking crime. However, the story wasn’t the selling point of Miami Vice. Shot in Miami, primarily in South Beach during the mid 80s, the show is credited with creating a surge of interest for restoring the art deco buildings of the neighborhood. Miami Vice was saturated with color and featured so much of the music of the 80s. In a way, it appealed to the new MTV generation with color, music, and spectacle.

The new fall fashions are here

Tragic! Fall of 1982, Saks Fifth Avenue  shows how mid-range they can be in this television commercial with a ridiculous jingle and images of East Coast prepster clothing. Saks, we expect greater of you.

I go, Yugo, we all go to hell in a Yugo

So the Yugo television commercial from 1986 claims the Volkswagen Beetle is “homely”. If only we could compare the Yugo to the Beetle. Of course, while vintage Beetles are plentiful, finding a Yugo outside a junkyard is like finding a unicorn.

Roseanne and Dan in Lanford

Here are the opening credits for the pilot episode of “Roseanne”, dating to 1988. Love her or hate her, Roseanne created a show which tackled serious issues through the lens of a working-class family.

little girls with big hair

1985 television commercial for Barbie in her pink Corvette, just like the one Angelyne drives. Whose hair is bigger? Barbies’, or the little girls?

creepy mother daughter moment

Do you douche? Why, yes I do. Let’s talk inappropriately about things you would never want to know about your mother while we walk along a beach as a camera crew records us to be broadcast to millions of viewers.

Racy stuff for the 1980s

Members Only – all others ignore this post

Shhh…it’s a secret, membership-only club. In 1982 Anthony Geary foolishly televised the secret club jackets, which were inexplicably popular for a few years, only to go into hiding for twenty years. The only person wearing them during the period of dormancy was Rosario, Karen Walker’s maid on Will and Grace. Because Rosario looked so spectacular in the club jacket, Memebers Only reissued and updated the jackets in 2007, now selling new ones for very high prices.

I was a member of Members Only during the 1980s, polished cotton in an ugly tan color.
