Huxtable the Huckster

Here is a cloyingly annoying television commercial for Jello Pudding, with Bill Cosby shilling unhealthy chemical-ridden slop to unsuspecting children. Yes, I realize we all ate this stuff as children, but as adults, I hope we protect our kids from this tripe. 1982

Your toenails are so grody

Since I actually live in the Valley, and am headed to Ventura Boulevard in a few minutes I thought it fitting to celebrate Moon Unit Zappa singing “Valley Girl”, in 1982, on Solid Gold. This song spawned Valley Girl imitators from Tarzana to Tuckahoe.

a headbangin’ love song for no one like you

Hair bands. I wasn’t such a fan in the 80s. They reminded me of pot-smoking guys in concert T-shirts driving T-top Camaros. Not my crowd. However, these songs are amazing. “No One Like You” from the Scorpions, 1982. A beautiful love song masquerading as a headbangers anthem. Twenty-five years later, I love the hair bands.

The new fall fashions are here

Tragic! Fall of 1982, Saks Fifth Avenue  shows how mid-range they can be in this television commercial with a ridiculous jingle and images of East Coast prepster clothing. Saks, we expect greater of you.

Give me back my man!

I’ll give you fish. I’ll give you candy. Walkin’ out of Corvette’s must be like walkin’ out of Piggly Wiggly.

We love the B52’s, especially the early years. Here they are in 1982 singing “Give Me Back My Man”.

Members Only – all others ignore this post

Shhh…it’s a secret, membership-only club. In 1982 Anthony Geary foolishly televised the secret club jackets, which were inexplicably popular for a few years, only to go into hiding for twenty years. The only person wearing them during the period of dormancy was Rosario, Karen Walker’s maid on Will and Grace. Because Rosario looked so spectacular in the club jacket, Memebers Only reissued and updated the jackets in 2007, now selling new ones for very high prices.

I was a member of Members Only during the 1980s, polished cotton in an ugly tan color.

Wham – George and Andrew so cute

“Young Guns” from Wham, 1982. Watch the story very carefully to see the relationship between George and Andrew. Yes, we understood the entire meaning all the way back from the beginning.

Mickey – cheerleaders on coke – 1982

A rather annoying little song, unless you’re hot for cheerleaders. Nevertheless, it’s a memorable icon of the period. “Mickey”, from Toni Basil, 1982
